Depending on qualifications and experience, candidates who are not selected for Mechanic in the interview process may be referred to an eligibility list for a higher level position (Senior Mechanic) or lower level position (Maintenance Worker). Referred candidates must be successful in an interview process for the applicable position to be placed on the higher or lower level eligibility list.

Job Description

Under supervision, the Mechanic performs technical duties and responsibilities in the maintenance, repair, service, and troubleshooting of equipment and machinery in wastewater treatment plants, and related facilities; performs predictive, preventive, and corrective maintenance on assigned equipment and machinery; and operates and maintains a variety of hand, pneumatic, and power tools and equipment.Specifically, this individual will be responsible for performing mechanical maintenance and repair on primary, secondary, dewatering, or odor control equipment in the plant, including boilers, pumps, stationary engines, air and gas compressors, scrubbers, blowers, belt filter presses, bar screens, backflow prevention equipment, augers and conveyor belts; performing predictive maintenance; troubleshooting cause of malfunctions using visual inspection and precision measuring and testing instruments; confined space entry requiring the use and operation of Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA); reading schematic drawings to determine location and layout of equipment; isolating and tagging equipment to be worked on before performing mechanical maintenance; reviewing equipment service logs for previous comments or repairs on equipment; electronically completing work orders for malfunctions identified during routine maintenance inspections; maintaining all records; and ordering replacement parts to perform maintenance and repairs.





Qualifications & Requirements:


The successful candidate will possess a high school diploma or equivalent supplemented by specialized training in the areas of mechanical equipment maintenance and repair.Two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience applying preventative and corrective mechanical maintenance skills on mechanical equipment maintenance and repair, as well as analyzing mechanical systems and processes.The successful candidate will be able to work independently in the absence of supervisors; communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing; enter information into a computer and establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.A valid California class C driver's license is required.In addition, a current California Water Environment Association (CWEA) Grade I Mechanical Technology Certificate is desired.

Hiring Salary Range (starting salary will be within this range based on qualifications):

Mechanic $30.97 - $34.14/Hour
Maintenance Worker $30.24 - $33.33/Hour
Senior Mechanic $35.92 - $39.

61/Hour

Physical Demands

Must possess mobility to work in the field; strength, stamina and mobility to perform medium to heavy physical work, to work in confined spaces, around machines and to climb and descend ladders, and operate varied hand and power tools and construction equipment; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio.The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking in operational areas to identify problems or hazards.Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate above-mentioned tools and equipment.Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, reach and climb to perform work and inspect work sites.

Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing a minimum of 40 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment.





Environmental Elements

Employees work in the field and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives, and contractors in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.



Disaster Service Workers

All Orange County Sanitation District employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the Orange County Sanitation District requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
